Championship Week Lines (Summer 2023)

The Lavender Llamas (-120)
MelRose Place (-120)
Over 6.0 (-110)
Under 6.0 (-130)

Notes: The Llamas were left for dead by much of the public, evidenced by the results of the playoff pool where a minuscule 5% of respondents picked them to advance to the final four.

Of course, not many people picked them to beat Vegas either so I’m not sure how much this really means. Lavender got through two difficult games last week without giving up a single goal as playoff Phelps was in full swing making saves, flashing the leather and starting chants for himself. It was a wild scene at the end of the game and multiple fans reportedly had to be stopped from streaking in celebration.

Can the Llamas keep the magic going? It won’t be easy against a fully loaded MelRose squad, their best one in team history. They should have a full roster minus Frank Puma attending. Adding to the mix. is that Ryan and Andrew’s boss will be in attendance and rather than splitting their allegiances down the middle, they’re betting on the MelRose ML and Ryan to score goals. Further adding to the uncertainty of this matchup is that Phelps is currently driving to NYC from Nashville with an ETA of 5:15 and with Sam’s gear in tow. A lot of variables to consider in this matchup which is why I have it rated as a complete and total toss-up. Bet at your own risk.

Llamas/MelRose (-110)
Blueberry Bulldogs (-130)
Over 6.0 (EVEN)
Under 6.0 (-145)

Notes: The winner of the first game takes on the top seeded Bulldogs who will come in fresh but without a warmup, having not played in several weeks and missing one of their top players in Cole. Still, the public doesn’t seem to mind.

Will the rest factor help blue notch the win or will the fully warmed up team start strong and never let up? I did a study last season of D5 doubleheaders where teams had a one game layover vs playing back-to-back and there was no statistical difference in win %. Of course, that was not a study on one team having not played previously and playoffs are a different animal altogether. I think blue gets the slight edge here, depending on if Zisser and I have fully recovered from Nashville or not (who the hell knows), but this is truly a night where I could see any team winning any game. One things for certain though: Phelps is an animal and I support his behavior (as does Hicks who paid about $500 for this sign).

Julie’s Football Club (-120)
Red Zeppelin (-120)
Over 5.5 (-120)
Under 5.5 (-120)

Notes: This is probably the tightest and most highly anticipated matchup of the night. These teams played in the regular season finale to an insanely long shootout ended by Keith in an electric scene.

So who do the fans have here?

It is basically a dead heat with 14 people picking red and 15 picking orange. Red has a powerful offense but with Carter leaving the team to start his senior year of college (seriously), their depth will be tested tonight. Orange has a solid D and one of the best goalies in the league, AJ, but can they match up to red’s speed and scoring depth? The battle of the rookie Joes will likely be the deciding factor as Jo Robin, a 5th round steal for JFC, matches up with Joe Magosin, taken 4th overall by red despite never having played a D5 game. They’ve been arguably the top two rookies this season and which one has a better game will likely decide this matchup. Although it’s tough to bet against Sal, who has correctly predicted the championship winner before the playoffs began in each of the past two seasons and took red this time around, I think orange’s defense will prove to be a bit too much in this one. JFC to win.

Notes: Unlike most seasons the 2/3 seeds have been given the top spots in the league power rankings and generally are being favored by the public, even if the bracket results have the top three teams at a dead heat. Out of 40 respondents, 11 picked orange, 10 picked blue and 9 picked red to win. Meanwhile, two picked yellow and just one (Jeff Jacobson) picked lavender.

Whether or not this means anything is up for debate but then again, we don’t even know who’s playing in this game so bet at your own risk, enjoy these props and I’ll see you at Dorrian’s circa 10:20 PM.
