Notes: The first matchup of championship weekend pits a team that pretty much everyone expected to make it to the final four against one that almost no one expected to make it this far. And to be fair, with their top two draft picks being total unknowns, that skepticism was somewhat warranted, although the hate went a little too far after the team lost their first few when those guys were absent. Since they’ve gotten into the lineup and gotten acclimated to the D5 style of play the team has been on a hot streak, reeling off six straight wins to close the regular season plus a blowout of purple last week to set up this semifinal matchup with 1st place blue. How does the public have this game rated? If you’ve read playoff previews in the past, you already know that they’re all over the higher seed, pretty much no matter what.

These teams did meet in week two and while blue won 4-0, both rosters were short and those early regular season matchups don’t mean much come playoff time. There are a lot of intriuging matchups in this one, including two of the league’s top goalies, but it likely comes down to a classic question of superstars vs depth. Glatt’s is a lot like the Oilers with two superstar forwards who finished 1 and 3 in the scoring race, but the depth can be a little suspect, particularly with Fullam out for this one. Meanwhile blue had the Hicks/James tandem finish at #5 and then no one else in the top 15, opting for scoring by committee. It’s going to be a fascinating matchup and while I am obviously installing blue as the favorite because the public action is all over them, this game should be closer than you’d expect. Ultimately, with two top goalies between the pipes and despite the fact that these were the 2nd and 3rd highest scoring teams in the regular season, in a tight semifinal game it’s the under for me.

Notes: Orange was the top defensive team in the league this season behind a career season from Max who already has multiple D5 cups on his resume. Meanwhile pink was the highest scoring team in the league, largely due to their incredible 19 goals on the final day of the regular season. A classic offense vs defense battle. Something’s gotta give.

True to form, the public is all over the favorite with 59% of respondents taking orange to win. I do wonder how much different this poll would be if Chad was in but then again if he was able to play tonight he would have never lasted until the 4th round. Funnily enough I’ve spoken to both Yehuda and Caitlin today and both felt the other team was more a speed team. I’m not sure which one is really faster overall, but there’s no question that these are two of the league’s elite and either one would be very deserving of making a championship appearance. For orange, they’re the clear favorite and will have to ride their elite defense and center rotation to a win. For pink, they would be looking to crash the party and follow the blueprint of the 2021 Goaldiggers who beat a heavily favored and on paper stronger Barrel squad with a combination of elite goaltending, smart defense and timely scoring en route to that franchise’s first championship appearance. More recently, last year’s Grassholes did something similar en route to that franchise’s first cup, although they were never power ranked last to start the season and in fact spent a good deal of it in first. Chad is a huge loss for pink but it’s tough to count them out after they made up 13 goals of differential on the season’s final day without him and won a very difficult game against the Ducks without him last week. I’m just not sure if it’ll be possible against a veteran and experienced orange squad that has all the pressure on them and should respond. Pie Pie to win 4-2.

The final game of the 2025 season. The two teams that premiered in the top slots of the power rankings and the two that premiered in the bottom two. For Zuck or Yehuda, a big win to silence the haters they’ve had to deal with all season. For orange, a first cup after an insane 2025 where they made the final four each season and already made one championship appearance. And for blue, a shot at a historic third straight cup. Should be an electric evening. See ya tonight.
