Week 5 Betting Lines (Spring 2023

I Just Blue Myself (-700)
Shooting Blancs (+380)
I Just Blue Myself (-3.0 Goals) (+105)
Shooting Blancs (+3.0 Goals) (-155)
Over 5.5 (-130)
Under 5.5 (-110)

Notes: This is a rematch of both of these teams’ opening games where blue needed a late empty netter to pull out a 3-1 win. Since then they’ve ascended to #1 in the latest league power rankings (not to be confused with Sylvester’s rogue power rankings) while white came in 9th and 8th respectively. I don’t think the Blancs are a total disaster on par with last place teams of past seasons but they certainly have some structural weaknesses, both roster-wise and in McCauley’s body. He will be out there tonight giving it a go but may be rusty after being mauled in Queens a few weeks ago (note: this was during a Saturday hockey game and not a random mugging). Rys and Cara will also apparently be missing this game too and Tash isn’t in town to sub. Meanwhile this is the finest attendance season in blue team history as every single person is in for this one. It’s still early in the season so tough to tell which teams are actually good and which are bound to regress to the mean, either positively or negatively, but I am fairly certain this is one of the highest lines in league history. Blue to win, and probably by 3 or more.

Notes: Sam finally makes his long-awaited season debut (long awaited if you’re on the red team or a RoyalVet stan) as the Chili Peppers roll out a mostly full lineup against a mostly full strength Hooligans squad. Green has been impressive with tight, gutty wins in both their games thus far this season and yet can’t get any respect in either sets of power ranks where they rank #7 and #9 despite sitting at #4 in the standings. Tonight they’ll have all their big guns with Neil, Tom and Stern all in while Amanda returns from Utah, still without a husband despite the fact that many dudes out there take multiple wives. To me, this is the most fascinating game of the night: a green team gunning for respect using their speed against a red team that needs to maximize their precious few games with a full lineup. Even though I generally agree that green is getting slept on a bit (note: this is not yet another Amanda whore reference, I’ll leave those to Jenn who is somewhat of an expert in the field), as long as Nate shows up relatively on time and doesn’t do anything insane with the lineup, the Chili Peppers should have enough to take this one.

Notes: Both teams play their 2nd game of the evening and have a chance to finish this game in 1st place in the standings. This game is pretty similar to the above matchup as the general roster composition of blue is pretty similar to red because they both drafted in a straightforward way. Round 1: Sam and Miles. Round 2: Alex and Tarnow. Round 3: Jeff Green and Phelps. Round 4: Ryann and Cherie. Green, meanwhile, has good team speed but was the last team by far to pick a lady and hopes that Amanda and Ellie can offer scoring by committee, even if they can’t necessarily offer backchecking by committee. The wildcard for this matchup will be the goaltending matchup where green took Max two full rounds after Jeff and Phelps kicked off the goalie run. If he can match their performance in net at a discount, the Hooligans should have enough to keep shocking the league. I’m not sure if it will happen but I would probably take the under in this game to hedge against it.

Notes: I’ve been uber bullish on JFC this entire season but this might be what they call in the biz a “scheduled loss.” Orange has started the season hot but won’t have Brad, Joe, Mitch, Aditya or Tash while red will have Sam. These two teams just played a tight 4-3 game that orange barely won off a last second Amit goal. In that game orange had a full roster while red didn’t have their 1st or 3rd round picks (Sam and Jeff Green). Tonight they’ll have both. This does not bode well for Football Club backers. Cherie will fill in for Tash, Julie will get a sub or two to help out on D, and she’s an experienced captain who should get the most out of what she has tonight, but some things are just inevitable like Thanos or bad decisions at Dorrian’s. Chili Peppers by multiple goals and Sam to tell me they’re a lock for the championship immediately after the game, then miss the next two weeks.

Notes: Whether you followed the league power ranks or Sylvester’s series of tirades, one thing was clear: MelRose will be a different team this season with or without Wes. While this is somewhat true for all teams with their first round picks, the way this team is structured puts a greater emphasis on him than most. If he’s in, this game is pretty much a coinflip between two of the top teams in the league. If he’s out, black gets the decided edge with a mostly full lineup. Add to the fact that Izzy is also a GTD and seems like the most likely outcome here is a Hippos victory. Then again if you told me a year ago that the Hippos would be the black team I wouldn’t have ever believed you so who the hell knows.
