Week 8 Box Scores (Fall 2023)

Bluebies vs Merry Pranksters

3rd Period:
PRK (1-0) – Sam Gelman (13) (assisted by Tom Fitzgerald) (1:29)
BLU (1-1) – Sam (5) (assisted by Corey) (2:03)
PRK (2-1) – Sam Gelman (14) (assisted by Joel) (4:54)
BLU (2-2) – Corey (9) (assisted by Sam) (9:08)
Overtime:
PRK (3-2) – Brooke (4) (assisted by Sam Gelman) (1:52)

GAME NOTES: A surprisingly defensive struggle as this game was scoreless through two periods before each team put up two goals in an action-packed third. In OT a not-great/really bad change by blue led to Gelman making possibly his first pass of the season for the Brooke OT winner, getting the Pranksters out of the 8/9 play-in matchup…this was legitimately the best game I had ever seen Cam play until it was surpassed three days later. This team as a whole has officially been upgraded from legit bad to possibly good.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
3rd – Brooke (GWG)
2nd – Cam (W, 1 GA)
1st – Sam Gelman (2G, 1A)

3rd Period:
PNK (5-1) – Rockoff (7) (assisted by Jo Robin) (13:25)

GAME NOTES: Purple kept it tight through the first half of the contest but pink broke it open late in the 2nd period with two goals in a minute and a half late to take a 4-1 lead into the intermission and close it out 5-1. Pink continues their ascent in the standings while purple will head to the play-in matchup in the first ever Collusion Bowl (more on that later).

3rd Period:
BDE (6-1) – Dom (7) (assisted by Shan) (4:02)
BDE (7-1) – Jay Travers (2) (assisted by Ryan Levine) (12:12)

GAME NOTES: A shorthanded blue team was no match for a full strength and scorching-hot yellow squad as the Dekes scored early and often en route to a dominating 7-1 victory….I think Mel must have sent that video of her opening goal, which was quietly uploaded to the YouTube page yesterday without notice, to everyone in her family, her gym and possibly her synagogue too. Either that or it’s going viral on Hockey Twitter.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
3rd – Mel (1G)
2nd – Ryan Levine (1G, 5A)
1st –Dom (4G)

Shootout Winner By Satok

GAME NOTES: One of the craziest games of the season as a showdown between two championship contenders was a laugher early on. The Blancs put up four goals in the first, then watched as yellow slowly but surely whittled that down, finally tying it with the goalie pulled and under two minutes left. Both teams had chances in OT with yellow getting the better of play. But in the end it didn’t matter as the Blancs were able to take this one down in the shootout…the Ryan/Dom vs Cherie/Cara prop bet line looks like a toss-up early on, then a blowout in favor of the ladies around midseason. But this night, where Ryan/Dom combined for 14 points, sealed an improbable comeback win for sexist gamblers everywhere…the fact that there’s a guy named Goulet in this league makes me so happy.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
3rd – Ryan Levine (2G)
2nd – Dom (1G, 1A)
1st – Adam Satok (1G, SOW)

Red Eyed Peas vs 96th Street Bastards

1st Period:
BST (1-0) – Pete Guiffre (4) (assisted by Mike Pigozzi) (1:20)
2nd Period:
RED (1-1) – Cole (9) (assisted by Cherie) (1:00)
RED (2-1) – Campbell (8) (assisted by Tarnow) (12:28)
RED (3-1) – Cherie (4) (assisted by Cole) (13:55)
3rd Period:
BST (2-3) – Hicks (8) (assisted by Mike Sanchick) (3:06)

GAME NOTES: The Bastards jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:20 in to the game and held that going into the first intermission. I’m not sure what exactly was said in the red huddle but there was probably a good deal of “coaching” aka possibly yelling by Nate and man, did it yield results. Red scored a minute into the 2nd and added two goals in the last two minutes, one of which involved a Cherie manhandling of Pete that I will be playing on a continuous loop during any future matchups with him in hockey or Strikers. Hicks cut the deficit late but the Peas held on and got to yell Mazel Tov at the end with a 3-2 victory that clinches the red franchise’s first #1 seed since the inaugural Summer 2018 season. Wow.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
3rd – Hicks (1G)
2nd – Cole (1G, 1A)
1st – Cherie (1G, 1A)

96th Street Bastards vs Jewish Golden Calfs

1st Period:
BST (1-0) – Amanda (3) (assisted by Alex Merone) (9:59)
JGC (1-1) – Keith (2) (assisted by Adam Herman) (11:00)
BST (2-1) – Maddy (2) (assisted by Pete Guiffre) (13:15)
2nd Period:
BST (3-1) – Gil (1) (assisted by Alex Merone) (2:30)
JGC (2-3) – Joe (1) (PP) (assisted by Minsky) (8:48)
JGC (3-3) – Minsky (10) (assisted by Cole) (9:47)
JGC (4-3) – Minsky (11) (assisted by Tash) (13:58)
3rd Period:
JGC (5-3) – Tommy Covelli (5) (PP) (assisted by Joe Moskowitz) (7:50)

GAME NOTES: In a meeting of two teams that really needed a win, black jumped out to leads of 1-0 and 3-1. It was a battle of competing trends as well with gold undefeated with Max in net while black was undefeated with Glanzer out of the lineup. In this epic battle, the goalie ultimately won as he made a number of big saves to spur a Calfs comeback. Minsky had two goals and an assist and contributions came from up and down the lineup but this is a totally different team with Joe in the lineup. Black played well but gold was just a bit better on this night. 5-3 JGC…amazingly, despite rampant accusations of collusion and league imbalance, the Bastards end the season with 5 straight losses and not a single win after the restart. That said, playoffs are a blank slate and they’ll get to face Jack, Annie, purple and of course The Milkman in the first ever Collusion Bowl. The weather gods may hate us but sometimes the hockey gods do smile upon us. Praise be.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
3rd – Alex Merone (2A)
2nd – Joe Moskowitz (1G, 1A)
1st – Minsky (2G, 1A)
