Pink Lemonade vs MelRose Place
1st Period:
MRP (1-0) – ChooChoo (2) (unassisted) (10:03)
3rd Period:
LEM (1-1) – Matt Stabel (3) (assisted by Avery) (10:12)
Overtime:
LEM (2-1) – Mike Sanchick (1) (unassisted) (1:42)
GAME NOTES: After the most random flash thunderstorm of them all wiped out games last week and made me sadder than a Leafs fan during the 2nd round of the playoffs, these two teams opened play to finish the final 32:30 of their game. A surprisingly chippy affair which MelRose led for most of the game until a point shot from Avery got deflected once, twice, three times a lady (in reality I have no idea how many times), leading to an OT where Sanchick converted a giveaway into the breakaway winner…MelRose will face the last place defending champion Goaldiggers in the play-in round while Pink will head to Cup Size Stadium on a 3 game win streak to close out their season. If Danilo and Noah show up for playoff games, watch out.
THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
3rd – ChooChoo (1G)
2nd – Avery (1A)
1st – Mike Sanchick (GWG)
Hungry Hippos vs Julie’s Football Club
1st Period:
JFC (1-0) – Steve Rys (5) (assisted by George) (6:43)
2nd Period:
JFC (2-0) – Mike Wright (1) (assisted by George) (3:59)
HIP (1-2) – Matt Reape (1) (assisted by Tom White) (9:43)
GAME NOTES: The Football Club was in control throughout this match with the Hippos missing several players including Braun for like the 20th straight week. Reape gave them a glimmer of hope with a goal in the final 20 seconds to cut the deficit to 1 but that was all they could sneak by AJ as orange hung on for a 2-1 minigame victory.
THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
3rd – AJ (W, 1 GA)
2nd – Mike Wright (GWG)
1st – George (2A)
My Cup Size Is Stanley vs Hungry Hippos
2nd Period:
HIP (1-0) – Eric Higger (6) (unassisted) (0:51)
CUP (1-1) – Milstein (1) (assisted by Yehuda) (5:50)
HIP (2-1) – Meatbox (6) (EN) (unassisted) (9:40)
GAME NOTES: With the game tied 1-1 and less than two minutes left, Jenn pulled off perhaps the savviest move of her coaching career in pulling the goalie despite being tied because only a regulation win would get Cup Size out of the play-in round. Sadly her gambit did not work out at all as Hicks was more than happy to bury an empty netter, sending Cup Size to the play-ins and the Hippos to either a 5th or 6th seed.
THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
3rd – Meatbox (GWG)
2nd – Casca (W, 1GA)
1st – Eric Higger (1G)
Julie’s Football Club vs Green Street Hooligans
2nd Period:
GSH (1-0) – Probie (13) (assisted by Sam) (1:20)
GAME NOTES: The first of a back-to-back minigame doubleheader saw a tight checking game with the only tally being a classic Sam to Probert stretch pass and goal. Orange would put on some pressure late but Max preserved the shutout as green picked up the W.
THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
3rd – Sam (1A)
2nd – Probie (1G)
1st – Max (W, SO)
Julie’s Football Club vs Green Street Hooligans
1st Period:
GSH (1-0) – Probie (14) (assisted by Sam) (8:43)
2nd Period:
JFC (1-1) – Kevin Aylesworth (2) (assisted by Alec) (6:43)
Overtime:
JFC (2-1) – Alex Bing (1) (assisted by Jaimie) (3:59)
GAME NOTES: For a while it looked like this was going to be a carbon copy of the previous game until Kevin tied it up with 3:17 left and Alex Bing scored on the first shift of OT to give orange a win in their regular season finale and vault them all the way up to the 2nd seed in the standings, pending the Rockets’ finale. I wouldn’t say the curse of orange is totally broken but this is already the 2nd best season in franchise history with the playoffs still to go.
THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
3rd – Sam (1A)
2nd – Kevin Aylesworth (1G)
1st – Alec (GWG)
Green Street Hooligans vs SexAzul Tension
1st Period:
GSH (1-0) – Campbell (3) (assisted by Russo) (0:49)
SEX (1-1) – Dave Liang (11) (assisted by Chris) (1:34)
SEX (2-1) – Austin Lyons (2) (assisted by Wes) (9:24)
GSH (2-2) – Sam (10) (assisted by Dana) (11:39)
3rd Period:
GSH (3-2) – Probie (15) (assisted by Rich) (3:33)
SEX (3-3) – Wes (9) (assisted by Brita) (6:23)
Overtime:
GSH (4-3) – Campbell (4) (assisted by Sam) (3:39)
GAME NOTES: An electric playoff-like atmosphere as the game I rescheduled like 4 times so Sam could play finally went down. After a first shift that saw both teams score, the game settled down a bit into a fast paced, back and forth affair…in the end, as was destined, we went to OT and for the first 3 minutes of the extra frame it was likely the tightest checking 3 on 3 of all time. Then the game opened up as the teams started trading chances, with a Dave Liang breakaway coming within inches of ending it before a Campbell one-timer from the high slot gave green their biggest win of the season…the Hooligans, who began the season with two straight losses to red and some nagging worries that they might suck, end the season on a 5-1 run and with the 4 seed locked up heading to the playoffs. Turns out red is just really good…blue doesn’t end the regular season undefeated ala the 2007 Patriots but still finishes with 2.7 points per game which, outside of the inaugural 6 game season, is an all-time record, and 27 points which is also a record for any season not counting the 15 game jumbo Summer/Fall ’21. Chants of “two more wins” could be heard echoing across Gramercy Park on Thursday night and for the foreseeable future as their next game, incredibly, won’t take place until September 13.
THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
3rd – Wes (1G, 1A)
2nd – Sam (1G, 1A)
1st – Campbell (2G)
