Playoff Scenarios

Our special correspondent, Captain Hippo of the Hipponauts, clearly has all sorts of free time going on at work and put together these playoff scenarios for your amusement/misery.  With one game left for each team before the playoffs, a quick look at what each team is playing for heading into tomorrow:

Week 9 Games: Browns/Warriors, Ball/Parrots, Cup/Hippos, Cheetahs/Sexy

Cleveland Browns (5-2-0-1, 19 pts):

  • The Browns take first if…
  • Scenario 1 (Regulation Win): Regulation Win clinches the 1 seed
  • Scenario 2 (Regulation Loss): Regulation Loss to Varsity Warriors + Regulation Loss by Sexy + Regulation/OT Loss by Hippos
  • Scenario 3 (OT Loss): OT Loss to Varsity Warriors + OT or Regulation Loss/OT Loss by Sexy + OT Win/Regulation Loss/OT Loss by Hippos
  • Scenario 4 (OT Win): OT Win over Varsity Warriors + Anything but Regulation wins by Sexy and Hippos
  • Likely Outcome: Top 2 seed
  • Notes: The Browns cannot finish lower than 3rd place.  They have the most total wins of all teams and thus own the tiebreaker over Sexy and Hippos.

Team Sexy (5-1-2-0, 19 pts):

  • Sexy takes 1st place if…
  • Scenario 1 (Regulation Win): Regulation win over Cheetahs coupled with anything other than a regulation win by the Browns
  • Scenario 2 (OT Win): OT win over Cheetahs coupled with an OT or Regulation Loss by the Browns and anything but a Hippos regulation win
  • Scenario 3 (OT Loss): OT Loss to Cheetahs coupled with a Regulation Loss by the Browns and some kind of Loss by the Hippos
  • Likely Outcome: Top 2 seed
  • Notes: Sexy cannot finish lower than third place but will need to overtake the Browns in points while holding off the Hippos to gain 1st.

Hungry Hippos (5-1-1-1, 18 pts):

      • The Hippos take 1st place if…
      • Scenario 1 (Regulation Win): Regulation Win over cup size coupled with anything other than regulation wins  by Team Sexy and Cleveland.
      • Scenario 2 (OT Win): OT Win over Cup Size coupled with a regulation loss by Cleveland and any kind of loss by Team Sexy
      • Likely Outcome: 3rd place
      • Notes: The Hippos cannot finish lower than 3rd place but need a win tomorrow night to have any shot at moving up to a top two seed.IMG_20181023_203215

    Hippos give the best hugs.

    Ball That (3-0-1-4, 10 pts):

        • Ball That takes 4th place if…
        • Scenario 1 (Regulation Win): Regulation win clinches the 4 seed
        • Scenario 2 (OT Win): OT win over Parrots and anything but a regulation win for the Cheetahs
        • Scenario 3 (OT Loss): OT Loss and any kind of loss by the Cheetahs
        • Scenario 4 (Regulation Loss): Regulation Loss and any kind of loss by Cheetahs that doesn’t close the 8 goal goal differential between the two teams and anything but a regulation win by Cup Size and any outcome by Varsity so long as Varsity doesn’t win AND close the goal differential difference of 16 between the two teams that currently exists
        • Likely Outcome: 4th
        • Notes: Ball That cannot finish lower than 7th place.  They have the wins tiebreaker over teams below them and are way ahead in goal differential as well.

The Charging Cheetahs (3-0-0-5, 9 pts):

        • Cheetahs take 4th place if…
        • Scenario 1 (Regulation Win): Regulation win and anything but a regulation win by Ball That
        • Scenario 2 (OT Win): OT Win and any kind of loss by Ball That
        • Scenario 3 (OT Loss): OT Loss and Ball That loss by 10 or more
        • Likely Outcome: 5th
        • Notes: The Charging Cheetahs cannot finish lower than 7th place but are likely to stay in the play-ins barring a Parrots upset over Ball That tomorrow night.

My Cup Size Is Stanley (1-2-1-4, 8 pts):

        • Cup Size takes 4th place if…
The only way they take 4th is with a regulation win, a regulation loss by Ball That, and an OT loss or regulation loss by the Cheetahs
        • Likely Outcome: Losing to the Hippos and staying in 6th
        • Notes: Cup Size can still fall to 8th if everything goes horribly wrong tomorrow night.  That would require the Warriors upsetting the 1st place Cleveland Browns, the Parrots upsetting Ball That and Cup Size falling to the Hippos.

The Varsity Warriors (2-0-1-5, 7 pts):

        • Warriors can take 4th if…
They need a miracle. A regulation win (one that is large enough to close the goal differential gap that exists with both them and Cup Size), Cup Size not getting a regulation win, The Cheetahs not getting any type of win, and Ball That losing in regulation.
        • Likely Outcome: 7th place
        • Notes: The defending champs can still fall to 8th if everything goes horribly wrong.  That would require the Parrots gaining two points on them in the standings, or the Parrots winning in regulation and the Warriors winning in OT/SO.  This would give the teams identical records at which point we would move to the third tiebreaker of goal differential.

The Purple Parrots (1-1-1-5, 6 pts):

      • The Parrots can move up to 6th if…
      • Scenario 1 (Regulation Win): Regulation win by Parrots, OT loss or worse by Cup Size, OT win or worse by Varsity Warriors
      • Scenario 2 (OT Win): OT win by Parrots, regulation loss by Cup Size, OT loss or worse by Varsity Warriors
      • Likely Outcome: 8th place
      • Notes: The Parrots have a better goal differential than both the Warriors and Cup Size and can thus jump either of them as long as they can match their record.  Ca-caw!
