WIN (5-3) – Nico (2) (EN) (assisted by Luke)

GAME NOTES: The first game of the evening (aka the only one without major controversy) featured the Kids Club heading north to the wall to face Winter Is Coming…Nico got the scoring started with her first goal of the season on a feed from Luke. Luke would add another goal before the end of the period to give Winter a 2-0 lead heading to the intermission…in the 2nd, the green team stormed back as Morgie Pants, aka Ol’ Pal Morgie, put in a goal from in front to get her team on the board. Just minutes later, Probie executed his patented chip-and-chase move past Caitlin, evening the score and ruining her birthday week…Luke put his team back in front early in the third on another lightning quick release, but Probie found Mia streaking to the front of the net and she buried it to tie the game as the blue bench could be heard on video saying “oh Jesus”…on the very next shift, Adam scored his first goal of the season on a wrister from the high slot. He proceeded to celebrate like Teemu Selanne breaking the rookie goals record, although to my knowledge no records were broken on this goal…Nico wrapped the game up with an empty netter as time expired. The goal moved her up to #12 on the All-Time D5 points list, and just two points behind Julie for #3 on the all-time ladies scoring list…Luke is off to a torrid start to the year with 8 points in 3 games…Probie was stoned on a 2nd period breakaway by Eitan and proceeded to give his stick some southern justice, as shown in the file photo below…with the win, Winter Is Coming moves back to 2nd place, only a point behind the Goonies who beat them in OT last week. The Kids Club will look to get on the right track next week as they face the Goonies for the second and final time this season.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
3rd – Adam Herman (GWG)
2nd – Nico (2G, 1A)
1st – Luke (2G, 2A)

When Probie misses a breakaway, he demands justice.

Chosen 1s vs Goonies

1st Period:
CHO (1-0) – Zach Denes (1) (unassisted) (11:57)
2nd Period:
CHO (2-0) – Jeff (4) (unassisted) (8:38)
GOO (1-2) – Zach Fein (1) (assisted by Cat Tremble) (11:30)
GOO (2-2) – Kevin (2) (assisted by Rob Meehan) (12:10)
3rd Period:
GOO (3-2) – Derek (3) (assisted by Ebenezer) (0:27)
GOO (4-2) – Derek (4) (unassisted) (6:33)
GOO (5-2) – Zach Fein (2) (EN) (assisted by Cherie) (12:57)

GAME NOTES: A star-packed showdown on 96th street saw Cherie, Derek, Fleming and the Goonies face off against Jeff, Ryann, Mike T (in relief) and the Chosen 1s…former Cleveland Brown Zach Denes got the scoring started late in the 2nd with a blast from outside the imaginary blueline…Jeff put his team up two midway through the 2nd on a highlight reel play which saw him take a pass out of midair without breaking stride and score on his own rebound on a partial breakaway. It was his 4th goal of the season, good for 2nd in the league behind Luke, who he bested for the scoring crown on the season’s final day last year…with just over a minute to go in the 2nd, the Goonies came alive. First it was Zach “Choo Choo” Fein blasting a shot far-side top corner to put his team within one. Then, on the very next shift, Rob found Kevin “Beardy” Tuohy in front to even the score at 2 and shock the orange team going into the intermission…coming out of the break, the white team did not let up. Derek put them ahead 3-2 just 27 seconds into the period…controversy erupted midway through the third when a shot by Derek appeared to be stopped by Greenwald, but was actually trickling by him. The ref blew the whistle as the ball was rolling past the line; one ref signaled no goal, while the other ref signaled that it was a clear goal as the ball went in first. After a conversation with Toronto, the refs requested video review to be enacted where it was determined that the ball crossed the line just barely before the whistle blew. District 5 goes by the actual whistle blowing, not intent to blow as the NHL does, so the booth determined that the ball was in first and the ruling on the court was overturned, with a goal awarded to the white team. You can check out the footage and the still frame of the moment the whistle blew below and decide for yourself…Zach added his 2nd of the game with time expiring to put the game away for white and pad the old stats for him. He’s now moved into 16th all time in points…with the win, the Goonies are now the only undefeated team left in the league (parity is alive and well). They will face the Rainy Day Kids Club on Tuesday while the Chosen 1s look to rebound against Jenn and team Cup Size.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
3rd – Jeff (Highlight Reel Goal)
2nd – Zach Fein (2G)
1st – Derek (2G including GWG)

In a photo finish, the ball is just barely past the line as the whistle blows.

Hungry Hippos vs The Charging Cheetahs

1st Period:
CHA (1-0) – Sweet Baby James (1) (assisted by Sully) (5:17)
HIP (1-1) – Hicks (3) (assisted by Sena) (11:10)
3rd Period:
CHA (2-1) – Sweet Baby James (2) (assisted by Sully) (4:45)
HIP (2-2) – Ariel (1) (assisted by Sena) (6:33)
HIP (3-2) – Hicks (2) (assisted by Sarah) (10:44)

GAME NOTES: An original six battle saw a Hippos team in need of a win facing a 1-1 Cheetahs squad coming off an upset victory over Jenn and team Cup Size…Sully and James had it going on in this one, connecting on two beautiful goals for the red team…the Hippos showed a ton of resilience in this one as they got an early goal from Hicks to tie the game at one (as Cherie yelled “Reeeeeeehabs” from the stands) and a goal midway through the third from Ariel to tie it at 2…with just over two minutes left in the game, Hicks put his team ahead with some suave finesse moves through the middle capped off with a sexy backhand deke. Unfortunately the cameraman had just gotten smoked in the face with a ball and was not able to capture the wonders of the Meatbox on film…the Cheetahs pressed for the late tying goal but came up just short. The Hippos pick up their first victory of the season and move into 5th place, just a point behind Jenn and the black team for the play-in bye. The Cheetahs slide back to 6th place and will play in the early game in week 4 against LBS North, aka Winter Is Coming.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
3rd – Sena (2A)
2nd – Sweet Baby James (2G)
1st – Hicks (2G including GWG)

My Cup Size Is Stanley vs Purple Parrots

1st Period:
PAR (1-0) – Stu (2) (assisted by Julie) (7:49)
2nd Period:
PAR (2-0) – Stu (3) (unassisted) (2:18)
CUP (1-2) – Hogg (1) (assisted by Gabe) (12:43)
3rd Period:
CUP (2-2) – Gabe (2) (assisted by Jenn) (9:10)
Overtime:
CUP (3-2) – Gene (1) (assisted by DRo) (1:27)

GAME NOTES: The final game of the evening pitted the surprise team of the season, the first place Parrots, against the preseason favorites…second round sensation Stu Barnes got the scoring started when he took a feed from Julie and took a slapshot that glanced off Gabe’s stick, changed directions and went in off the crossbar, then put in his second of the game and third of the season to give his team a 2-0 lead. It looked like Tim might make that hold up as he made a number of incredible saves. Guess when you’re filling in for Campbell, you have to bring your A-game…the black team mounted a furious rally as Hogg tied the game up with less than 20 seconds left in the 2nd period…Gabe got his revenge for Tim’s probable save of the year later when he buried the rebound off Jenn’s shot from the point…as if this night wasn’t contentious enough, the game ended on a stuff-in goal as the purple team alleged that the ball only went in because the net was dislodged while the black team insisted that the players only hit the pad and the ball was already in when the net moved. The call on the ice was a goal and even reviewing the footage frame by frame, it would be tough to overturn the call…this is the first game in D5 history where two of the stars came from the losing team. Hey, when one guy puts up two goals and the other makes multiple save of the year candidates, what can ya do…the Parrots drop their first game of the season, albeit in overtime, and will look to get back on the right track when they face the Hippos at home next week. Cup Size will head out to Tel Aviv for a road date against the Chosen 1s.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME:
3rd – Tim Burke (incredible shit)
2nd – Stu (2G)
1st – Gene (GWG)
