Spring 2025 was a banner season for D5, the largest spring season we’ve ever had and quite honestly one of the most fun, but there were a few storylines that may have slipped under the radar. The D5 media has you covered.
Stern Has Tremendous Final Season
Lost in the hype of Jack and Annie’s farewell tour was that it was also the final season for Mike Stern, former scoring champion and playoff MVP, who tied for 4th in goals with 8 in 10 games. It’s been one hell of a career and he went out the way he spent a lot of it: in the penalty box. Buy him a shot or five at Dorrian’s tonight.
Jeff Green Has Borderline Career Year
Lost in the weird season for the Pizza Rats was that Jeff Green was, as Hicks put it earlier this season, straight up ballin’. If not for him I don’t even know what the Rats record would have been as he only gave up one or two goals in every game until May. Of course, Campbell being the selfish attention-hog that he is put up a record breaking GAA and four shutouts to take all the attention, but it was one hell of a year for one of D5’s most accomplished and longest tenured goalies.
Lucas Almost Breaks League Record For Games
The midseason trade-a-palooze by Jenn had a bunch of ripple effects throughout the league but maybe the funniest one was multiple players having more than 10 games played this season. Lucas by my count could have had 13 games which would have been the all-time record but he missed one early for the artist formerly known as Beatin’ Meat and then Cup Size, with their seeding secured, made their season finale a minigame so that playoff games could run on time (spoiler alert: it didn’t work). Pretty incredible stuff from this season’s rookie of the year.
Ryan Finishes 3rd In Both Scoring AND Goaltending
If I gave you a preseason line on Ryan Levine finish to be exactly the same in the scoring and goaltending race, I don’t even want to think about what kind of odds I would’ve had to offer to make that enticing. But that’s exactly what happened as Ryan finished 3rd in scoring in what is hilariously an off-year while also finishing 3rd in the goaltending race due to having one game played in net for blue where he only let up one goal. Of course, he was supposed to play two games that night but somehow forgot the only piece of equipment he actually owned (the glove/blocker set) and since he’s a weirdo righty glove, we had to wait for AJ to finish up so he could borrow his. Will he try defense next season to do the full spectrum of positions like Jack and Simon?
Annie & Goose Chase History
If red wins the title, Goose ties Andrew for the most cups won in league history. If blue wins, Annie goes out on top tied with Andrew for the most cups. It should be noted that if maroon wins, both Sanchick and Julie will inch closer and tie Annie and Goose with 4. But for now, Andrew remains #1 and the fact that he missed green’s loss last week means that he remains undefeated in D5 playoff games. Well, kind of. He technically lost his first ever one to Shooting Blancs, but because that season we did an NBA-style play-in tournament the Llamas had one more chance, and they did not disappoint in reeling off five straight wins. To bring it full circle, that Llamas team featured Goose scoring a huge goal in the championship and was captained by Annie.
Jack Wins Scoring Title On Defense
There were a lot of skeptics when the plan was announced to play the #1 overall pick out of position in his final season. What we got was a feat that may never be seen again; someone playing all 10 games on defense and winning the league scoring title with 9 goals and 8 assists. If we kept track of shot attempts, that record would have been absolutely destroyed as well (at least until Minsky comes back next season). Just a truly marvelous season by a guy who came into this league a tadpole (you just had to be there) and came out a legend.
