Rumor has it Bodner got out at the start of the 3rd and didn’t come off the rink until he scored 8 minutes in. And by rumor I mean that’s pretty much what happened. Some might say that’s an insane shift length but it’s somewhat admirable to see someone set a goal for themself and not quit until they achieve it. Also anyone who didn’t like that probably wasn’t a fan of Alexei Kovalev and that man’s a legend. Anyway, Bodner scores, but purple gets worked.

GAME NOTES:
A super shorthanded pranksters squad without their captain and top scorer Sam (along with a host of other players) nonetheless puts up a tremendous effort in keeping this one close throughout led by the heroics of Jacob Berkowitz who is apparently one of the top goalies in the league. Who knew. Some of the saves were truly incredible but blue was able to at least bury two and hang on for a surprisingly hard fought 2-0 win to open their season.

I expected pink to get the better of play but Carl to potentially steal this game for purple. Turns out I had this game completely backwards as purple appeared to actually get the better of play but simply could not sneak one past Tyler. Donny Fuchs would add a flop shot on the 18th hole for the empty netter to seal the game for pink and move the Cookie Monsters to 0-2 on the season with the last few minutes of a tied game against blue pending.

Tyler continues to stake his claim as potentially the top goalie in the league as, after being drafted as the first goalie off the board in the Fall Draft, he submits another insane effort in keeping gold off the board after an early goal, particularly in the final few minutes. I’m not sure what else would’ve had to be done to get a tying goal but needless to say it didn’t happen as some highlight reel saves by Tyler and some timely shot blocks by the brown defense gave Hicks what might be his first season opening win in multiple calendar years. 2-1 Chocolate MilkMob. GAME NOTES:
When people ask me who the sharpest bettor in the league is they guess all the usual suspects. Ryan. Cardello. Mikey. Tony (ok, no one guesses him). But the actual answer, believe it or not, is Nate. This guy places maybe 1 or 2 bets every season, on a completely random game, and has a win rate approaching 90%. It’s honestly very impressive. So right before this game when I got a request for a supermax bet from Nate on the Pranksters moneyline, even though they were the underdog, it was a bit concerning. And through 41 minutes it looked like Nate was about to eat his first L (short for Lerner) in a while as Pie Pie led 3-2 and just had to hang on and play tough defense for the final minute. Unfortunately, instead they decided to leave Gelman, a perennial top five scorer and clearly the Pranksters’ best scoring threat, alone in the slot with enough time to dust the ball off and call his shot like Babe Ruth if he really wanted to. The result was a tying goal for tie dye and an OT winner for Anthony Alleva, fast establishing himself as a top defenseman in this league, and perhaps most upsettingly, yet another financial victory for Nate. Sigh.

GAME NOTES:
A tight, surprisingly low scoring contest on the second game for both teams on the evening. Not that I think that’s the reason for the lack of scoring; it’s moreso the goaltending (Tyler vs Jeff) which is up league-wide and honestly might cause scoring to finally regress to reasonable hockey levels after several seasons of pure insanity. Anyways, the Choco Mob took an early lead on a Jo Robin tally but Pranksters rallied back, as they often do, led by OT hero from the previous game Anthony with the tying goal and rookie Aaron with the winner. Pranksters once again look like they could be this season’s sleeper team, incredibly for the third time in a row. People will never learn.

Shootout Winner By Everett
GAME NOTES:
Last year’s camo team was a true juggernaut, going 11-1 on the season and playoffs en route to a cup in their inaugural season. The lone loss? A 5-4 shootout loss to Glatt’s early in the season. Matthew McConaughey had it right: time is indeed a flat circle as once again an early season tilt between these teams goes to a shootout where Glatt’s (now Bruger King) gets the better of them via a highlight reel tying goal with just 10 seconds left and two goals in a shootout, sending Bruger King fans home happy, Whoppers in hand, on opening night. Also Tony almost lost an eye and now looks like Le Chiffre from Casino Royale. That part is kind of unfortunate but hardly tarnishes the evening for silver.
